Lesotho will host the second Africa-EU Renewable Energy Research and Innovation Symposium from 23-26 January 2018 at Manthabiseng National Convention Centre. Organised by the National University of Lesotho (NUL), the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the conference will attract more than 100 international scientists and innovators from all over Africa and Europe. On occasion of the symposium, an Energy Research Centre as well as a Master of Science in Sustainable Energy programme will be officially launched at NUL.
Sustainable energy development is essential for achieving almost all of the Sustainable Development Goals: From its role in the eradication of poverty through advancements in health, development in both continents – covering the areas of renewable energy, power generation, decentraucation, water supply and industrialization, to combating climate change. At the symposium, the experts will discuss ongoing research, innovations and opportunities for sustainable energy systems, energy socioeconomics and entrepreneurship.
Mr Niklas Hayek, GIZ Project Manager for RECP, commented, “Academia plays a crucial role in the promotion of more sustainable energy systems, technology development in the past decades has been impressive. With this symposium, we want to help translate this research into practice by linking up leading international scientists with experts, businesses and decision makers in Lesotho.”
Dr Moeketsi Mpholo, Administrator of the Energy Research Centre at National University of Lesotho, added: “With the establishment of the Energy Research Centre and a postgraduate programme on sustainable energy, NUL is striving to be a hub for energy research and innovation in the region. The Africa-EU Renewable Energy Research and Innovation Symposium is an excellent opportunity for us to share our experience, exchange knowledge and establish collaborations in this field”.
The Symposium will take place on occasion of the National University of Lesotho International Science and Technology Innovation Conference & Expo (NULISTICE) 2018. NULISITCE will be a convergence of international scholars from many areas of Science and Technology with the theme “Resource Mobilization and Entrepreneurship Action for Development.” Furthermore, the conference will host the third NUL Science and Technology Research and Innovation Expo – showcasing local project ideas that have potential for driving entrepreneurship to the community, hence stimulating economic growth and employment.
